Stefano Mazzotti
The Italian artist was born in 1969 in Cesena.
He learned his artistic craft autodidactically and graduated from the university only to be prepared for his general professional life.
His first major commission - to create some illustrations - was given to him by the magazine Selen (Edizioni Trentini). In this "practical school" Mazotti learned the reverence for deadlines and got the taste to try erotic comics.
This decision resulted in several albums for the "Selenium"series between 1998 and 2003. In the comic volumes, Mazzotti still traditionally uses pencil and coloured pencil. However, these works cannot be compared with the illustrations of recent years.
Mazzotti's characters - especially the male protagonists - are reminiscent of the works of Giovanna Casotto and Luca Tarlazzi. Mazzotti is qualitatively absolutely equal to the mentioned artists. The stories themselves are also on the level of the "selenium artist group" - meaning that the sex scenes are explicit and the range is limited to the usual gimmicks without much fetish or S&M-climbing.... except for exceptions, when some short stories become too much "fumetti-neri"-like and get some (unnecessary) violent peaks. All Selen-Albums-publications contain only short stories which are independent of each other.
With the introduction of the computer and its possibilities as a working tool for artists, Mazzotti's way of working changed. Although a lot of work continues to be done with the pencil, final (colour) work is usually done on the computer.
Mazzotti:"This has hardly any impact on the quality, message and expressiveness of the works. After all, it is still the artistic hand that now leads the optical pen instead of the pencil. The impression of the erotic mood in the illustrations does not change as a result".
After his excellent comic works from 1998 to 2003, Mazzotti now dedicates himself more to erotic illustrations. In the volumes of SQP, the artist also provides a brief insight into his work processes. In addition to the final results, the black-and-white sketches and preliminary drawings are also shown.
His illustrations are sexy, some of them quite explicit, but always a pleasure for the erotic soul. In the Velvet Love works, the basic theme is mainly about lesbian gimmicks with some bondage and fetish inlays. Schoolgirls, nurses, cheerleaders and businesswomen, most sex fantasies and pin-up clichés are best covered by Mazzotti's illustrations. Another "fetish" is added with the band Tatz. It shows beautiful women with mostly complex tattoos. With Giddy Up! it quickly becomes clear which theme is dealt with in this volume: playful cowgirls!
Admittedly, there is a lot of "new stuff" in "pin-up" and erotic women's illustrations, even Mazzotti's drawings do not show. But Mazzotti is one of the few excellent artists dedicated to this genre.
Some original works from the album "Velvet Love" have even made it to the Museum of Erotic Art (Museo d' Arte Erotica) in Venice. Certainly a small "accolade" for Mazzotti's work.
Selected comic material and some illustrations from the "Selenium"series have been collected and published in the volume Storie erotic no. 22 (Ok Book Collection, Edizioni Trentini).
His first comic strip on the famous Venetian Giacomo Girolamo Casanova Mémoires de Casanova: Bellino was published by Delcourt (France) in 2013. |

Links: |
