Rick Wolf

In September 2009 occur a small e-mail-interview with the artist Rick Wolf. The Brazilian-born artist works for almost five years in the erotic comic genre.

Some errors detract from clarity within the english text - the comic-storys are written at first in the native language and than translated into english - his drawings and short storys are well worth seeing!
In addition, Rick Wolf provided with his scans of sketches and pencil drawings an interesting insight in his work.

So, here is the original interview.

I think "Rick Wolf" is an alias. Any particular reason why you choose it? Maybe there is an interesting story behind the name.
Actually it is a not very interesting story (laughs) At first, my only thought was to create an air of mystery around me ...
I believe this has worked ... Moreover, I believe I still have the soul of old wolf bastard ... An old wolf bastard ... (laughs)

On your website you have a little bio. Can you tell us some more details of your life. For example: where you come from (Portugal?), where do you live at the moment? Education? You attend an Art School?
Well, I was born and live in Brazil. Born in Rio de Janeiro (City of Samba and the Carnival), where I lived 35 years, I´m 42 years old and work professionally with drawings of more than 20 years, worked with illustrations, cartoons, comics ... I started working with some adult comics five years, and until recently I had a regular job and was always my porn comics the night, some time I took this job in full. I really like what I do and want to continue in this business for many years yet. (with the help of much coffee (Love coffee)). ... I do not have any art school.

You work about five years in the adult comic business. Tell us something about the beginning. When did you start with your career as an artist for comic, Illustrations, covers, etc.
I started with adult comics working for a web site that no longer exists, was a new project (and the editor had no money), but even so I assumed the post of illustrator of one of the characters ... A super hero ... I made about 40 / 50 pages, but received only a small part of the payment of these pages ... The web site is unable to continue ... But I do not give up ... I kept trying, and now I'm here ..

To choose the internet as the platform to publish your art is the modern way of many new artist. In these days it is hard to find an publisher who takes the risk with adult material. And the illegal scans on the internet makes "the printing way" even harder. What was your intention to choose "the online path"?
Just this! This you write in your question ... The difficulty of achieving any publisher to publish the material in the form of an album or magazine (paper). In four or five years, I published (a magazine) so far in only a small publisher in my country, Brazil.

Where you receive inspiration for your work?
In the form of draws, certainly a number of great artists (some are on your web site) ... In the form of text, I use many experiences I had, and also when I'm reading some texts and stories on the Internet to seek help in time to write ... But basically my main experience is still the comics.

I saw your little tutorial on your website. But anyhow, tell us something about your techniques, drawing materials and/or software skills.
I am an artist of the paper, that is, I still like drawing with pencils, pens and brushes ... I always start by the text, writing my ideas and conversations ... Then I make sketches of the pages, always trying to create some rhythm ... Normally I do all the pages in pencil, then go to ink (India ink)... One day I make a page, a page and a half in pencil or ink on two pages ... My knowledge of software can be summed up in Photoshop, Corel, and Word to write ...

I read, for some jobs you can access help of good friends; for coloring and script. Tell us a little about them.
They are wonderful professionals. And also my great friends, coloring pages of my work, there are better ... I also know a little color, but for lack of time, I'd rather pay for them to be ready as soon as possible ... Working often with three guys, all Brazilians ... For the translation I have an old friend who helps me a lot in the scripts as needed.

Do you have favorite comic artist? Which artist had or have influence of your work, respectively your adult comic work.
Wow! Several artists, so I will not say just one (it would be unfair), but I would say that the classical artists of the theme of adult comics are my biggest influences ...

Can you give us your position or estimation about the (brazilian/or the comic business itself) comic business.
Not good ... Has never been ... Today might be a little better, but I'm pessimistic about the comics in my country, unfortunately, because we have here great comic artists - and many who can not complete an art education because there is no one best comic business in Brazil.

Do you have other passions which you can tell us?
Movies, history, reading, beer ...

How do you see your future? Plans with the website or future project in what you can give us a little insight look?
I see my future working hard, at least that's what I want ... When drawing comics of course ... As for my web site, I have new plans to soon ... Posting new stories of Amber, a new character will have its debut (a super hero.). And now I have put some comics from another character my Captain Red Scarlett (a character who lives in the eighteenth century) ...

Last Question. It´s the question about "the question I forgot to ask". So, tell us something about it. What do you want to say?
Thank everyone who gave me an opportunity to write and draw my ideas ... Thank everyone who supported me so I could write and draw my ideas, and thank all who love and buy my comics, because without them I'm nothing ....
