Ironwood

Between 1991 and 1995, the artist and author Bill Willingham created the erotic masterpiece Ironwood!

"Ironwood is still his only excursion to the erotic comic genre.

Born in 1956, the US artist - living in Minnesota - has been in the comic book business for several decades and has already worked for a number of well-known comic houses such as DC and Vertigo. His most famous works are without a doubt the successful comic series Elementals and the fairytale Fables. Willingham worked as an author and artist for both series.

But back to Ironwood: The hero Dragavon ("Son of a Dragon") is an adventurer in the fantasy world of Ironwood and encounters numerous monsters, minotaurs and pissed-off sorcerers, whose silence you shouldn't disturb.

He gets the order from the beautiful Pandora to find the mysterious Lazarus dagger for her. Together with the dwarf Gyp and the "old" acquaintance Ursula (her sign Minotaur) Dragavon tries to solve the problem. But his opponents on this hunt are not inactive. The leader of the opposing party, the opaque Bishop Major Simon...

Willingham's drawings are of the highest quality and his narrative style is imaginative and rich in detail. One could blame "Ironwood" for the fact that the story itself is a bit thin and written down on a DIN A4 page. Nevertheless, Willingham, with his lively and sympathetic characters, more than compensates for this "lack".

Ironwood is one of the best adult fantasy comics.

Willingham played with all the clichéd facets of the fantasy genre and turned them into a short story that can certainly come up with new ideas.

After all, for example, a genie in a bottle is not only good for material desires. "Inexpensive djinns" are not a bad investment for lascivious "boatwomen" (of course serving on a stylish airship!). It's just a pity that the side effects of the "Djinn Summoning" are a bit drastic. The busty, four-armed (!) boatwoman turns into a stinking skeleton after the Tet-a-Tet with the Djinn. Bad for Dragavon.

It's fun to dive into the world of Ironwood. The only negative thing: There are no more adventures.

The series ran in the USA on Eros Comix and brought it to eleven comicbooks. These issues were compiled in 1993 and 1996 in two anthologies. The series also appeared in French and Spanish translations.

Ironwood
